Treating Founder Without
Horseshoes
(Some people think the sum total
of my site is the boot swap page. Not true!)
Boots are a temporary fix, and not an ideal substitute for bare hooves that have gradually adapted to hard, rocky ground. There are necessarily going to be trade-offs and compromises with any boot. Leaving them on for days at a time can create other problems, such as thrush, heat retention, and softening of the hooves. Poor boot fit can create rubbing problems, etc. I see them as useful for being able to work horses on surfaces they have not yet acclimated to, such as horses living on soft surfaces wearing boots to enable working them on gravel roads. Boots also have value in some rehabs, especially in cases of sole penetration. Soaking boots have a place in replicating daily exposure of hooves to water that horses living in the wild get when they stand in streams or ponds to drink. Soaking boots can also be used to medicate conditions such as thrush.
If you are relying on boots year after year in order to ride at all, though, something needs to be re-evaluated.
A post 1/6/10 on the naturalhorsetrim email list by an endurance rider:
| "He's
got big beautiful black hooves with gigantic healthy frogs and the
trimmers love looking at his feet, but he just can't go very well
without coverage."
I recommend you start a "bare hoof conditioning program." Like you, I kept looking for the best boots for my tender-footed horse, and over a 5 year period spent a lot of money and now have enough boots to start a dealership. 18 months ago I decided that I was not doing my horse any favors by always using boots. He had been barefoot for 5 years and doing endurance in boots, and was still not barefoot sound. I got hurt and could not ride for a couple months, so I decided to start all over with a "bare hoof conditioning program." I designed it like a gym workout. Start out easy, do lots of repetitions before moving up; don't overdo it and end up hurt. Only one rule, no boots. Started out hand walking, long as possible, sometimes 3 hours--very boring, but after 2 months, the improvement was worth it. Then started riding strictly at the walk, long as possible, etc., often with my eyes closed, and then peeking out to see where he was taking us--very boring, but slowly increased his ability to walk on any terrain. Then started trotting on easy footing, long as possible, etc., adding short stretches of rough stuff. You get the idea, and it is a slow process, don't rush it. My horse is now barefoot sound on all footing. I will still use glue-on boots for 50 mile endurance rides, but all the rest of our riding is barefoot. "Has anyone had any luck with the Bares? I'd love to hear some reviews of those." I bought and used several pairs of Bares on all 3 of my horses. They are a tough, long wearing, heavy boot, hard to get on properly, need to use a mallet to smack them on after adjusting the bungees snug enough, gaiters rubbed on 2 horses, slippery on grass and in rain. Like others have suggested, I liked Old Macs, but the originals, not the G-2's. The best thing I ever did for my horse was put lots of effort into conditioning his bare hooves. --Don Huston |
Xenophen's "The Art of Horsemanship,"
a classic dating from an era when barefoot Greek
cavalry horses were routinely performing amazing feats of endurance by today's
standards, has some interesting observations on how to toughen the feet up.
He actually recommends that they spend several hours a day on fist-sized rounded
rocks to toughen up both their hooves and legs. There are many other
interesting tips on training, working and caring for horses. These ideas
are well worth considering when you think about how much longer their horses
lived, and how much longer they could remain in hard work...than our horses
today.

I am providing this page to help boot buyers and sellers connect as a free public service. I am not responsible for the conduct of the buyers or sellers, nor for the quality of the merchandise. I don't personally know the majority of the people who advertise here. I merely offer a place where boot buyers and sellers get together.
I suggest PayPal for increasing the safety of transactions with people you don't know. If you pay for something that is never shipped to you, you do have some recourse through PayPal. You can open a case against the seller, and if the seller cannot prove they shipped you a package, PayPal could give you a refund...called a charge-back. It is also the simplest, cheapest way to convert currencies for foreign sales. They do charge sellers a modest fee for this service. The benefit to sellers, though, is that they don't have to wonder if a check is good. More info: www.paypal.com
I also make an effort to put the information up
accurately, but I don't want to be held responsible for any errors.
However, a LOT of people have used this page very successfully to buy or sell boots! Some comments...
|
"Just wanted you to know
both the size 5 and 6 boots were sold. Thanks so much for the use of
your web site--it allowed me to sell them and not lose $250.00!" "Thank you so much for
the use of this facility. I have bought a pair of boots using these
ads. Many thanks for the service--it is much appreciated, and I will
use it again (also told my friends!)"-- "Again, can't thank you enough
for the website you provide. The boots sold--after what, four days on your
site? The receiver received them today...thank you. What a thoughtful
service you provide." "Thank you for providing this service, which sold my boots in 1 week!" "I have sold my last
pair of Easyboots, so can you please remove my ad from your website? Thank you
so much for providing this service - I received numerous responses and all
transactions went well without a hitch." "Gretchen
~ I have sold all sizes of Boa Boots. My listing is dated 11/29/07. I
can't thank you enough for you letting us use your web site. I now have
enough money after selling the boots to purchase new ones in the correct
size for my new horse." "Wow, they sold really fast. Thanks again. "Hi Gretchen. When I told a friend I sold my boots so fast, she
asked me to list hers! Thanks!!
"First, thank you!! WHAT A FANTASTIC service you offer! I hope
you've tried to sell ad space to the
various manufacturers, to recoup your time? You
certainly deserve it! What a nice service, thank
you."
"I wanted to let you know that I just sold my Cavallo Simple Boots Size 1.
Thanks so much for providing this service. There is definitely a
learning curve when it comes to the vast array of boots now offered.
It was fun to talk to the various prospective buyers exchanging stories and
knowledge. Thanks again!"
"Thank you for the service, we made a swap and everything went great."
"Many thanks for providing this service--it's a much better way of getting a
fair price than on eBay."
"My ad can be removed as I may
have sold them to a friend and have found the boots I was looking for. Thank
you so much, I love your site and have used it more than once now."
"Hello Gretchen, This is to let you know that my boots did sell. I
really want to thank you for helping me sell these boots. The website
got me many responses, which surprised me. You're doing a good thing
here by helping get back something from boots which are not of use any more
to me, but are to someone else and their horse. Thank you again."
"Can't believe it! Boots sold within a day of posting! Actually,
could have sold them twice! Thanks, Gretchen, so much."
"Could you please remove the listing for 2 pairs of boots you listed
for me on 9/10--they sold in 3 days, all transactions complete in one week.
Can't thank you enough for all you do to foster natural trim!"
"Thanks so much for having this wonderful website! My boots sold in a
week! I really appreciate this service that you offer."
"I LOVE this website; I sold 2 pairs of boots in 4 days. Please take
my ad down, and THANK YOU!" |

The newest ads are at the bottom of the page. My approach once was to not take ads down unless the people asked me to. Since there was so much dead wood from people not remembering to do this after their boots sold, and there were hundreds of dead ads at one point, I began cleaning house on this page. If when I recheck monthly and I don't hear back from you within a week, or email to you bounces, your ad will come down

Old Macs (original version)

(They go more by length; if your
width is a 2 and length is a 5,
use a 5 with shims in the side. Run wide, and
short front-to-back.

Old Macs G2 (updated version)

(The new version of the Old Macs are
a more normal shape than the old version;
they are not wider than long, as the old version was, and fit more horses, and
even some mules.
The breakover on the bottoms no longer has the point
that the old version did.)

Soft-Ride boots and
insoles

(A superior hospital-type boot with
insoles of 5 densities available.
I do not recommend
the dual density insole. In many cases you may want to shave off the frog
support. The
insoles' heels are slightly thicker than the toes. In cases where there
is a real sole deficit
in the toe, you could reverse the pads and raise the toes more than the heels
to get a
ground-parallel coffin bone once the frog support is shaved off level with the
rest of the
pad. Order primarily by width. Their orthotics also fit into Cavallo
Simple boots.

Sell
Date: 2-3-10
Quantity: 4 size 4 with solid blue standard insoles, and 2 size 3
with solid blue and dual density blue/purple insoles
Size: (see above)
Brand: Soft-Ride boots
Price: $100 for the size 3 pair with blue insoles; pair dual
density insoles $50, and size 4 with clean insoles $100 and size 4 with stained
insoles for $90...plus whatever the actual shipping cost will be.
Condition: Excellent outer shells on all these boots. Only
worn for a week or two. Two of the 4 standard blue insoles have iodine
stains in the rubber, but doesn't effect the cushion at all or the life of the
insert. This is from when our farrier seared the sole of our horse who was
foundering.
My
experience was very good using the boots as they eased my horse's founder pain
tremendously with these boots, but it was tainted in that it was very difficult
to get the right size boot for my horse. Soft Ride's web site is very nice
and you can even print out the sizes so you can have your horse stand on it to
ensure a proper fit, but it isn't close to being right. These boots run
big to what you measure. Even the size 4's were a bit sloppy on him after
purchasing the 3's, which were very sloppy/floppy.
